Music video self evaluation

One aspect of my video that went well was the editing which I was able to achieve by over filming and planning. By planning what time of the day I filmed, it allowed me to create transitions that not only matched the lyrics and song but lead to most of the shots being vibrant which was important due to the context of the song, young and alive. The choice of costume also amplified the vibrance and colour of the video as I choose the actress to wear bright green tracksuit which mirrored the background of the song and artist as the colour represents an uplifting perception and the tracksuit conveying youth and a ‘relaxed’ feel. I also over filmed massively which gave me a wide range of choice when it came to editing to conclude with the best shot. This meant the timing of each transition and editing was smooth as I had more content to work with and use leading to a more professional feel to my video overall. I filmed the same shot many times, but I also experimented with the angles of each shot and locations which meant I had many different options to choose from when it came to editing therefore meaning each shot fitted together and looked right as well as eliminating any errors in lip syncing. The transitions and editing helped build a more captivating video as the shots were more creative and this allowed less intriguing shots, such as the actor walking, more interesting and maintained an upbeat feel to match the song. For example, a reverse edit or jump shot meant simple footage became engaging.

However, there was a part where the quality of the shot was poor due to the camera and lighting. Although I planned to film when there was less light due to the transition, I did not test the shot beforehand meaning the lip syncing was unclear as you couldn’t see the actors face well. To improve this, I should have had gone to the location and filmed at this time of night previously to check the quality and clearness of the actor and overall shot so I would have had time to plan a different shot and adapt this part of the video. The other issue this caused was a red light in the actor’s eye which displayed how the shot was not checked. To improve the quality, I should have inspected each shot closely to check that there were no errors with lighting which would have made my music video look polished, high quality and professional. Another part of the video that could be improved is the variety of shot lengths and location types as I used mostly 5 second clips so consisted of many ‘scenic’ settings. Including longer shots or simpler backgrounds to change the focus onto the actors and the lip syncing, which this would create a more interesting and engaging video.
